Windows XP versus Windows7 on FE clients

Company has used a FE/BE Access97 application for years.
BE tables are linked when main menu form is loaded after the logon screen. It has always taken about 30 secs for each user (12 in total)to connect to all tables in BE, but once the user is connected, the performance is excellent.
Some users have now upgraded to W7 and the linking to BE is now instantaneous!! !!
Whatever could have changed? (not that they're complaining)

What server are the clients logging in to?
For us, when we moved everything from win97 to XP, IT took a ton of security add-ins out of the startup; thus, not only did startups go faster; but file access was better too because there were not so many hoops to jump.
We experienced the same quatum leap in speed wheen IT pushed us all out to Win7Pro/Enterprise-64 and the latest and greatest server setups.... once again fewer hoops to jump thru.

Server is running Windows Server 2008 and as far as I know the client PCs are as delivered from supplier.
