    Alternative to Access

    Hi i am a university student planning my final year project what i am going to do revolves around RFID.

    simply put i am going to read data from a text file input it into a table and then retrieve the associated information from a database which is associated with the text file details.

    i wanted to do this in Acces as i am moderatly comfortable with VBA and Access.

    My tutor has told my to use other alternatives. Can you propose what you think is the best/simplist for me to understand. and areas you would recommend me to begin studying over the summer to prepare for my project.

      Depends on how much money you have.

      Free options are MySQL, SQLite, and SQL Server Express. Paid options are Oracle, DB2, Sybase, SQL Server, etc. Technically, you could store all your data in a text file if you were so inclined.

      But that's just the backend. Access serves a dual purpose as a front end as well. You can use almost any of the programming languages for that. But since you're familiar with VBA, VB.NET may be the easiest for you. You could also go with a web browser as the front end.

          Thanks gor the quick reply, i managed to learn a little MySQL last night so i will use that. You mentioned i could go with a web browser as the front end, by this do you me somthing like phpmyadmin, oracle application express, or wavemaker??

              If you will bear with me, I would like to ask if your tutor has supplied any arguments for NOT using access?

              Im curious because I am often faced with people who do not think to highly of Access but in reality now little about the potential of access.

                  Not as such. i really like Access and have done previous modules in it before. But i think because of that reason he would like to see me push myself a little bit more. i will be attemping to learn a new method over the summer but if i have no luck i think i may have to resort back to Access.

                      I often feel that some VB programmers think of access as a "lesser" tool.

                      I personally disagree, and believe that for SOME areas Access is the perfect tool, while sure, for other areas it may be better to code it in VB (or similar).

                      Compare VB to a bus and Access to a car. You can fit more items and people onto the bus, but its slower and you need a big/truck license to drive it. The car can go faster, and its easier to operate allthoguh you do still need a license. Howerver it is limited to fewer people.

                          PHP is certainly an option. And it's free. PHP my admin is an interface to administer MySQL databases. But you will also want to pick up HTML, CSS, and javascript if you're going to go the web browser route. You will also need to set up a server and install all the software. It's a lot to do if it's your first time.

                              you can use MySQL as backend.

                              Since you are familiar with VB, why dont you use VB.Net or C#.Net.

                              Im not sure if RFID application can be done in PHP alone. I think you'll need to design Java Applet for your RFID interface. Then embed it to PHP.
