Problem connecting to back end database

Hi, I have a network of five PCs with 4 running Vista Home Basic with the other one running XP. I have an Access 2007 database system wherein the back end is installed in the public folder of one of the Vista PCs. I installed a copy of the front end on each of the 5 PCs. The problem is , on two of the Vista PCs, the PC crashes when the front end connects to the back end and another PC is already connected to the back end. I have already checked the Access default open mode and it is set to "shared". I already tried disabling my antivirus and firewall to no avail. The settings for all the Vista PCs in the Network and Sharing center are all identical. When the problematic PCs are the first to connect to the back end, the others can connect without any problem. Is there anything else that I could do? Please help. Thanks.

If you've already checked the sharing settings in the client installation then I can only guess this is a networks/OS Configuration issue.

Unfortunately this is not an Access issue (assuming I'm correct of course) and worse, I suspect even the networks guys would need more information from you to have any idea what the issue is. I know that's not easy, as you probably would have posted anything you understood to be relevant.

I could move it to the Networks forum if you feel it may help, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope to be fair. It's probably the sort of thing you'd need to get someone in to look at for you.

Good luck anyway, and welcome to Bytes!

Is the front end on the network as well?

If so there could be a problem if different users map to the back end in different ways. That could be the case if the back end is referred to using a drive letter and users have that drive mapped to a different network location.

Instead of referring to the back end tables with a drive letter, use the full network path: \\server\direct ory\mydatabase. mdb

          Ah - missed that.

On the crashing PCs, could it be it is just taking a long time to link to the back end? Ctrl-Break allows you to stop the code from executing, for cases where Access seems to freeze. Try pressing Ctrl-Break and waiting a minute or two to see if you get into the code.
