group header changes in snaking report

In Access 2003 reports, I have a multi-column report. The reports lists names and addresses. The data is grouped by the first letter of the last name. If the letter changes in the middle of a column, the next 'group' starts at the top of the next column instead of just continuing down the page.

What I want is

A

Abbot
Adams
...
Akins

B

Baker
Bell
...
Brown

What I'm getting is

A

Abbot
Adams
...
Akins

then the 'B's begin at the top of the next column no matter how far down the previous column the 'A's ended.

Does anyone have any suggestions?
Click Sorting/Grouping button on the report design toolbar
Set Keep together property to "No" (currently it's set to "Whole group")
Thanks for the answer! I checked that and it is set to 'No'. When the report was still a single column report, I didn't have the problem. Do you have any other idea what might be causing it? Thanks.

I reproduced the same result using some test data.
I've posted the solution in my first post.

Maybe you could make a new test report and try to get the results you wanted.
Than compare your original report with test report to find the difference...

Thank you. I can't reproduce my error with other reports. I also created a new one and couldn't reproduce the error. I can't find out what's different about this report yet, but I'll keep looking. Thanks for the advice.
