HELP!-Compact on Close removed my db

    help.

My db has "Compact on Close" in the options area.

When I just closed it, the db is gone...complete ly gone. I did a file search and it does not show up. It just disappeared.

    Can anyone offer any advice?

    Hi, Nathan.

I guess, if it still exists at all, then it may now have a default name - db<n>.mdb.

    Kind regards,
    Fish.

      Fish,

Yup, its gone. I did a search for .mdb and it is nowhere to be seen. Even under a generic name.

I guess I will close this question and start over

      Thanks for the reply.

From Allen Browne's Access 2007 page:

The advantages you gain and problems you experience when upgrading to Microsoft Access 2007 from previous versions

"Update 21 Dec 2007: There are also reports of Access 2007 losing the entire MDB on compact. Some users report that Access gives a dialog to the effect that Access cannot delete the database because it is "read-only" just before it deletes it. If you see this message when compacting, DO NOT ANSWER THE DIALOG. Instead, open the Windows Explorer, and make a copy of your database, as Access is about to destroy it. "

If you're using AC2007, this is probably your problem.. watch out so it doesnt happen again.

Yes, this also happened to me today. I lost the entire database I was working on. I did have a backup but I have lost two days work!
Will not use Compact On Close ever again.

This is a very serious bug in Access 2007 and needs to be fixed.

Compact On Close should never be used in any version of Access! While previous versions didn't cause the database to disappear altogether, compacting in any version has been indicted as a major cause of database corruption! Because of this, compacting should only be done after a backup has been created !
